SAN BERNARDINO – A San Bernardino man and woman were arrested after the vehicle they were in was stopped and found to have a loaded handgun inside. On Saturday evening at around 5:52 p.m. a deputy from the Central Station conducted a traffic stop of a vehicle near 9th Street and Tippecanoe Avenue.
The vehicle stopped and the deputy made contact with the occupants and smelled a strong odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle.
The driver, 32-year-old Eddie Chavez and his passenger, 38-year-old Brandy Chavez showed signs of being under the influence, officials said. Both were detained to allow the deputy to conduct a vehicle search.
In the vehicle the deputy located a loaded handgun, drugs, money, and three digital scales. Eddie, a convicted felon was arrested and during a pat down deputies found around an ounce of methamphetamine and $170.00. Since Eddie Chavez is a convicted felon, he is prohibited from possessing a firearm.
Brandy was also arrested for being under the influence of methamphetamine and was subsequently booked into the Central Detention Center. There are no arrest records or court dates immediately available for Brandy.
Eddie claimed to be having a medical emergency during his arrest so he was seen at a nearby hospital, where he was cleared and transported to the West Valley Detention Center. Eddie was booked for sales of methamphetamine, possession of methamphetamine while armed, felon in possession of a firearm and for being under the influence of a controlled substance. He is being held in lieu of $50,000 bail and is scheduled for an arraignment hearing on Tuesday afternoon at the San Bernardino Superior Court.
