SAN BERNARDINO – A San Bernardino man was convicted of attempted murder and now faces 30 years to life in prison. The defendant, Gonzalo Ibanez, 23, according to San Bernardino County District Attorney officials was a known gang member involved in a 2015 shooting on Base Line Street in the City of Highland. Ibanez was convicted of one count of Attempted Murder, one count of Shooting at an Occupied Building, and one count of Shooting at an Occupied Vehicle, with the jury finding true gun and gang enhancements.
The incident occurred on November 29, 2015, when Ibanez lost control of the van he was driving and collided with the victim’s vehicle. After hitting the vehicle, Ibanez attempted to flee the scene. “The victim wanted to make sure the police caught up to the defendant so he engaged in a pursuit while on the phone with 911 operators,” said Deputy District Attorney Justin Croker.
Ibanez pulled into the center lane and stopped the car. The victim made a U-turn and attempted to drive away. “The victim heard several gunshots ring out a few seconds after making the U-turn,” said Crocker. The victim or his vehicle were not hit, but one bullet flew into a nearby liquor store missing everyone inside. The victim provided police with the suspect vehicle license plate leading to the finding of the van in a nearby trailer park.
