RIVERSIDE – Two adults and three children were displaced as a blaze tore through a home on the 3300 block of Park Avenue Sunday morning. City of Riverside Fire personnel responded to the fire to find the single story home with heavy fire and smoke showing from the front of the home.
Initial reports indicated that there were children inside the home. During both primary and the secondary search, the home was found to be free of occupants. Although firefighters were able to contain the fire to the front portion of the home, the home sustained heavy heat and smoke damage. Fire officials said that two bedrooms were closed and sustained minimal damage.
Firefighters determined that there were no smoke detectors in the home and that the cause of the fire was likely caused by an electrical extension cord going to a wall mounted air conditioning unit. The five residents were not in the home when the fire started. The Red Cross, the property management, and A California Fire Foundation were on scene to assist.
The City of Riverside Fire Department reminds the community on the importance of having a working smoke detector and carbon monoxide detectors in your residential home. A working smoke detector can quickly alert occupants to a fire in the structure for a more efficient notification. Neighbors from down the street noticed the smoke and called 911. The neighbor next door did not have a smoke detector as well and they were given a smoke detector from the fire department after the fire. Smoke inhalation is the leading cause of fire related deaths in the United States.
