YUCAIPA – An 18-year-old Yucaipa resident was arrested for allegedly snatching a purse from the shopping cart of an elderly woman last week. Last Wednesday just after 4:00 p.m. Yucaipa Police were called to the Vons Market located in the 34000 block of Yucaipa Boulevard for the report of a stolen purse.
Police learned that the elderly woman left her purse in the seating area of the cart while she bent over to pick up an item from the lower store shelves. During the moment she took her attention off of her cart, the male subject was captured on surveillance video taking her purse and leaving the store.
The elderly woman was distraught over the theft of her purse, which contained her grocery money as well as other items. Store employees from the store gathered their own money to pay for the woman’s items. That night at approximately 10:00 p.m. the victim’s purse was located inside of a gas station trash can. The gas station clerk who found the purse turned it into the police department.
Through investigation, deputies identified David Anthony Yniguez as the suspect. According to court records, Yniguez was previously arrested in May 2016 for sexual battery and indecent exposure. Yniguez was due in court on Thursday, July 21st for the pretrial for the sexual battery case, that was previously reported by the Fontana Herald News.
On Tuesday at around 9:00 a.m. a search warrant was served at Yniguez’ home and evidence linking him to the crime was obtained. He was arrested and booked into the Central Detention Center for grand theft and elder abuse. He is scheduled for an arraignment hearing at the San Bernardino Superior Court on Thursday afternoon.
