RIVERSIDE – A Perris and a Riverside man were arrested after attempting to shoot and rob a victim authorities said.
On Friday night, at around 8:20 p.m. a victim reporting that an attempted armed robbery at Rutland Park in the 6900 block of Rutland Avenue in the City of Riverside. The victim was able to describe the suspect vehicle as a white Ford Mustang with out of state license plates.
When the officer arrived, they made contact with the victim while a patrol sergeant did an area check attempting to locate the suspect vehicle. The vehicle was located on Rutland Avenue occupied by three. One of the occupants got out of the vehicle and fled on foot. The two who remained in the car were detained after the vehicle was stopped. The suspect who fled on foot was located nearby. An apparently tossed handgun was located in the fleeing occupants path Riverside Police officials said.
Through investigation officers learned that the suspect approached the victim at the park, the two detained, later identified as 19-year-old Omar Lumberag from Perris and 23-year-old Jorge Reyes Mitre allegedly passed the gun back and forth to each other attempting to shoot at the victim, but the gun malfunctioned. The suspects then assaulted the victim and attempted to steal his cellphone, but ended up leaving before taking anything. Both suspects were positively identified. The gun located by officers was also identified as the gun used during the incident. The third person was later identified and released.
Lumberag and Mitre were arrested and booked into jail for attempted murder, attempted robbery, and weapons violations.
