RIVERSIDE, Calif. – The report of a sexual assault shook Riverside residents, especially since the suspect was not in custody.
The sexual assault was reported on the morning of February 14, 2019. The caller said that she was sexually assaulted at the dead end on the 5000 block of Tequesquite Avenue in Riverside. Officers responded and took a report from the woman who said she was sitting in her vehicle, when the suspect approached and sexually assaulted her. She said he then left to the Santa Ana River bottom area.
An extensive search for the suspect was made, including the use of the Riverside County of Sheriff K-9 bloodhound and handler. No suspect was located. A sketch artist then worked with the woman to create a sketch of the suspect. The sketch was distributed in order to attempt to identify the suspect. “This investigation generated a considerable amount of interest from the community,” the press release said. “Many of our residents were understandably concerned and fearful. Those who live near or enjoy visiting Bonaminio Park and the Mt. Rubidoux trails were especially fearful in the wake of this alleged attack”
Interviews and follow ups were made. The extensive investigation led to the determination that the incident was a false report and it never occurred.
“While this is a sensitive matter and being handled appropriately, it is important to assure the community that the Riverside Police Department takes all such allegations seriously and dedicates all available resources to solving the crime and protecting the community” stated Chief Sergio Diaz. “It is also important, in this instance, to assure the community they have nothing to fear as it relates to this alleged crime or the alleged perpetrator.”
