PHELAN, Calif. – A Phelan man was amazed at the compassion of Chewy.com after he changed his order to reflect one dog rather than the two after one of his dogs passed away. ”Just a few days ago, I got these beautiful tulips and irises in a vase, and beautiful note that was very heartfelt from Chewy,” he said.
Michael Simpson, of Phelan, was devastated when he woke up to find the dog he had for 14-years-old had passed away. Michael adopted “Gretchen” from an elderly woman who could no longer care for her when she was only 8-months-old. Michael has suffered from a terminal illness for some time and he says that Gretchen helped get him through times where he was near death. Through the years, Michael has ordered from Chewy.com for Gretchen and his other dog, “Maxwell”. He said that on a regular basis he has been ordering Blue Buffalo Healthy Weight dog food, tennis balls, and ArthriSoothe chews (for arthritis).
A few days prior to her death, Michael could see that Gretchen was just not herself. He knew that her time was coming soon and was there for her, just how she has been there for him throughout the years. On February 17, 2019, Gretchen passed away at her home while Michael played with her, talked to her, and told her it was alright for her to go. He assured Gretchen that he would not be mad at her for going and it was her time to go. “I was able to look into her eyes and I could know what is on her mind,” said Michael. “That night we slept so sound that we woke up and she was gone. I believe we were helped to sleep so she could go.”
Michael described Gretchen as a happy dog, that would never leave his side. Although Gretchen was not trained, Michael describes her as an incredibly attentive and intelligent dog who offered service and support to him. He said she learned everything on her own, from picking remote controls up and handing them to him, to helping him up from the ground when she noticed he was struggling. “I’m thinking of looking into another service dog,” said Michael. “They are just so expensive.”
Michael said that although he knew it was her time and that she was dying due to old age, he wanted her to spend her final days at home. “I would highly recommend someone to help a pet go on their own terms without a veterinarian if there is no pain,” said Michael. “I learned a lot, and it just helped her know my love for her and that I’d do anything. Society as a whole just wants it to be done quickly. All of it is is a natural act that happens to every living thing on our beautiful planet.”Michael highly recommends Chewy.com to any pet owners since they have always provided great service. “Thank you, they are beautiful! The note has helped me with my grief. I have never come across a company that cares this much about their customers and their fur babies. I would highly recommend that anyone switch and uses them. Its so worth the time, their business model is the best.”
